FABIUS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A mother and her 16-year-old daughter were killed in a fire Tuesday in their St. Joseph County home.

It happened at a house on Harder Road between Youngman and Brick Chapel roads in Fabius Township, near Three Rivers.

When first responders got to the scene, the living room and garage were engulfed in flames. Three children were able to escape through a window to safety, but Michigan State Police say a 37-year-old woman and her teenage daughter were killed.

State police have identified the victims as Michelle Bixler and her daughter Cheyenne.

The three children who were able to escape were ages 8 to 18.

Crews weren’t able to get inside to search for them because of the location of the fire. Once it was put out, firefighters found their bodies inside.

The three children who got out were taken to Three Rivers Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
