Jeep crashes into semi and catches fire

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Benton Township fire and police personnel were able to put out a blazing Jeep and get the driver out alive, but he is now in serious condition at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Police were called to the Pilot Travel Center, 1860 E. Napier Avenue in Benton Township, around 8 p.m. Wednesday on report of a Jeep that had collided with a semi. The rig was in the process of turning into the truck stop at the time.

When police arrived, they vound the Jeep on fire with the driver still inside.

The Benton Township Fire Department and police officers managed to put the fire out and get the driver to Spectrum Health Lakeland. He was then flown to Bronson Hospital and is in serious condition with severe burns and suffering from smoke inhalation.

The semi driver was not hurt, and the crash is under investigation.
