ASH TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Several German shepherd puppies were found dumped on a highway Thursday near Detroit.

The dogs had Canine parvovirus, commonly known as parvo — a highly contagious virus that causes gastrointestinal illness in puppies and young dogs. It can be fatal without treatment.

The Monroe County Animal Shelter believes there could be more abandoned puppies in the area. People who see more dogs is asked to call their local animal shelter and to not bring them around family pets.

A nonprofit organization is caring for the puppies and is asking for online donations to help.
