LANSING, Mich. — Beginning Monday, June 1, essential transactions that have not been available online can be made through appointments.

Appointments will be available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments become open 24 hours before appointment times.

Transactions that can be handled by appointment:

  • Driver licenses and state ID transactions that must be done in person
  • Title transfers
  • Operator, CDL, chauffeur, mechanic and motorcycle testing
  • Seasonal commercial vehicle renewal

Branch doors will be locked, with a greeter on hand to let people in at their appointment time.

Attendance to an appointment must be made alone, wearing a mask or homemade face covering, and observe social distancing.

With reopening of SOS offices comes a new color coded system of renewal documents:

  • Red: Vehicle registration
  • Blue: Driver’s license
  • Green: State identification card
  • Teal: Watercraft
  • Gray: Snowmobile
  • Purple: Special plate

The new renewal forms are already being mailed out.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said this is a positive step in the right direction for re-opening Michigan.

She said, "We are moving forward as a state. We are emerging out of the moment that we were in March, April, and May.”

Secretary Benson is also excited to have their employees return to work.

"We’ve had nearly 1,000 employees furloughed for the past couple of week,s recognizing the challenging budget situation we are in now and these employees will now be able to return back to work,' she said.
