Suspect arrested after shootout and chase in Montcalm County

MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich. — A suspect was arrested in Montcalm County after a shootout and police chase on Sunday morning.

At 7:36 a.m. Sunday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery at a residence in the 7400 block of South Blackmer Road. The investigation showed that a 32-year-old Illinois man came to the residence to purchase a dog, an argument took place and the Illinois man fired several gunshots at the homeowner. The homeowner retrieved a rifle and fired back at the suspect.

The suspect then stole the dog and fled in a vehicle. Troopers located the vehicle on South Blackmer Road and attempted to make a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle fled and made its way to M-57. Troopers continued to pursue the suspect’s vehicle west on M-57 into the city of Greenville. During the pursuit on M-57 the suspect vehicle, a black Chrysler 300, was swerving into oncoming traffic.

Troopers are requesting citizens who this vehicle swerved at to contact the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post at (989) 352-8444 so troopers can obtain witness statements from them.

The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle became disabled on Maplewood Drive just south of M-57 in the city of Greenville. The suspect was taken into custody at that time. The dog was recovered and is OK.

The incident remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
