MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich. — A Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office detective has died after a “short battle with illness.”

The department did not say what illness Lt. Jose “Joe” Patino died from in its announcement Sunday on Facebook.

Patino was with the sheriff’s office for 36 years, spending a lot of that time in the detective bureau before becoming a sergeant and then a lieutenant.

“Joe’s investigative talents were second to none and touched the lives of many,” the sheriff’s office said. “Joe was known for his knowledge of criminal investigations, his care for victims and even his fair treatment of suspects. Under Joe’s direction, the detective bureau was very successful and was respected within the entire region, assisting many outside agencies.”

A law enforcement procession took place Tuesday escorting Patino from Simpson’s Funeral Home in Sheridan to Simpson’s Funeral Home in Stanton.

A public visitation was also held Tuesday afternoon.
