The Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a lawsuit challenging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's powers to issue emergency executive orders.

The lawsuit was filed by several medical professionals and providers in Western Michigan over the governor's executive order that wouldn't allow nonessential medical procedures.

According to the medical groups, which provide services that were deemed "nonessential," the governor's ban "risked the financial ruin" of them and forced the postponements or cancellations of important medical procedures.

"The delay and cancellation of these procedures had grievous effects on some of the plaintiffs’ patients," a brief filed in court reads. "The Governor’s ban, and her decision to continue it until the end of May, illustrate the shortcomings with having the executive branch, rather than the representative legislature, make the laws."

The court will hear oral arguments at 9:30 a.m.
