Woman injured during fire at Ferris State University apartment

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — A 22-year-old woman was injured during a fire on Ferris State University’s campus Sunday evening.

It happened about 5:10 p.m. at 157 Cardinal Court, according to a news release Monday.

Big Rapids City Fire Department firefighters were told people were inside the apartment building, yelling.

A Ferris State University Department of Public Safety officer reported smoke in the building.

Firefighters began attacking the fire within a few minutes of arriving.

During a primary search, fire crews found a 22-year-old woman who had sustained smoke inhalation and burns.

She was transported to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital and later to Butterworth Hospital for treatment.

The fire was under control just after 5:30 p.m.

It appears to have started in the kitchen area of the apartment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
