DETROIT (WXYZ) — It’s a big moment for Detroit’s culinary scene as the city will now be included in the MICHELIN Guide’s selection process, giving restaurants the opportunity to be considered for MICHELIN Stars.

Visit Detroit and the MICHELIN Guide made the announcement of the Great Lakes expansion on Wednesday, and includes the cities of Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. All cities equally contributed financially to have Michelin come to their cities, for an undisclosed amount.

According to Visit Detroit, this is the first time Detroit’s culinary community will be evaluated by MICHELIN inspectors, and the full restaurant selection will be revealed at the 2027 MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony.
Eligible restaurants include the entire area Visit Detroit services, which includes Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
“Being named a MICHELIN Guide destination is a milestone moment for Detroit and Southeast Michigan," said Claude Molinari, President & CEO, Visit Detroit, in a statement. “It reinforces Detroit’s emergence as a premier culinary destination in the United States, known for its diverse dining scene, world-class chefs and authentic food culture. This recognition puts us on a global stage, attracting new visitors, elevating our chefs and restaurateurs, and reinforcing food as a driver of tourism and economic growth. We're incredibly excited about what this means for the future of our destination."

Inspectors analyze product quality, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine, and consistency over time and across the entire menu.
Here are the possible honors within the MICHELIN Guide:
- The famous one, two and three MICHELIN Stars identify establishments serving exceptional cuisine that’s rich in flavor, remarkably executed and infused with the personality of a talented chef.
- The Bib Gourmand is a designation given to select restaurants that offer good quality food for a good value – often known as personal favorites among the inspectors when dining on their own time.
- The MICHELIN Green Star honors restaurants that are pioneers in mindful gastronomy.
- Recommended restaurants and special professional awards are also highlighted by the MICHELIN Guide inspectors.
Restaurant owner and chef Jared Gadbaw of Oak & Reel in Detroit already has a Michelin star from his time as a chef in New York City. He says the recognition is an honor, but also comes with pressures to perform.
"It's exciting in that you know it'll bring kind of attention to our city and continue this momentum that I think Detroit has had for a number of years now," he said. "And then there's the flip side in that there's a lot of stress to it and expectations are higher."

Chefs like Austin Munno, who works at Oak & Reel, says Michelin having a presence in the city will help owners retain talented chefs.
"Detroit was kind of like a proving ground...to a certain level, and then end up leaving and going to Chicago or New York," he said.

The Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association is also looking forward to the new edition.
"The MRLA is very encouraged to learn that Detroit will soon be recognized for the creative culinary brilliance it has cultivated over the last dozen years. Detroit deserves to be included in the MICHELIN Guide and will no doubt be a proud representative of the newly formed Great Lakes regional edition. We look forward to working with Visit Detroit and our eligible members throughout southeast Michigan to promote Detroit's unique restaurant community to the world," said MRLA President and CEO Justin Winslow in a statement.
