HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 16-year-old West Ottawa High School student was hit and killed by a vehicle in Holland Township Wednesday morning.

It happened around 7:12 a.m. on James Street near Beech Street.

Authorities say the girl was walking west in the roadway to her bus stop on James Street when she was hit by an eastbound vehicle. She was taken to Holland Hospital by ambulance after the crash, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver who hit the girl told deputies that she didn't see the teen until the time of impact.

West Ottawa High School Principal Jason Reinecke released a statement on the student's death:

“It’s difficult to express the sense of heartbreak and loss our student body feels today. The thoughts of the entire West Ottawa Public Schools community are with the student’s family and friends at this time. We have services and resources on campus to help our students and staff, and members of our crisis response team are available today and in the coming days to meet one-on-one and in groups with those in need of support.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office asks anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 1-800-249-0911
