JENISON, Mich. — A 29-year-old Kentwood man drowned Monday evening in the lake at 8th Avenue Park in Georgetown Township.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, officers from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office responded to an unresponsive man on 7000 8th Ave, along with Georgetown Fire/Rescue and Life EMS.
Upon investigation, officers found that the Kentwood man had been trying to retrieve a football that had drifted about 25 yards into the lake.
While swimming out to the ball, him beginning to struggle before going under the water, witnesses observed.
Witnesses proceeded to take rafts to his location and were able to pull him from the water and back to shore to begin CPR.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and began life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful.
This incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
