ALLENDALE, Mich. — Grand Valley State University’s police department is warning students of fraudulent emails appearing to come from school email addresses asking for gift cards.
GVSU police say the emails are using variations like username.gvsu.edu@gmail.com to attempt to copy school accounts. The emails sent an urgent message to get people to respond and eventually send them gift cards or other goods while promising to reimburse them at a later date.
The police department has received multiple reports from students already this semester.
People who receive these types of emails are asked to notify the school’s information technology help desk and their friends.
