GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The Board of Light and Power SIMS Plant, located on Harbor Island in Grand Haven, has been demolished.

The smokestack was knocked down at 8 a.m. Friday.

A crowd of people gathered to watch as it was knocked down.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has provided a map depicting a 1,400-foot safe zone, adding that it includes the farmers market and Chinook Pier. They advise everyone to refrain from entering that perimeter.

We’re told those in the near vicinity may seek shelter at Lynn Sherwood Waterfront Stadium and that the parking lot at the Grand Haven Municipal Marina will be closed.
