MUSKEGON, Mich. — A porch fire quickly spread to the rest of a home, killing 3 animals.
According to Muskegon Fire Department Deputy Director Jay Paulson, there was one person sleeping inside when the fire started. They woke up because one of their cats was scratching at the door, trying to get out. They saw the fire and were able to get out of the house without being hurt.
The fire spread quickly and the house was fully engulfed by the time the fire department arrived 4 minutes after the first calls to 911. Muskegon Fire Department was helped by Mona Shores and Muskegon Heights Fire Departments to put out the flames.
Three animals were killed in the fire, a dog and 2 cats.
Firefighters were able to save one dog during the fire and a cat was found under a couch 20 minutes after the fire was put out. Both animals needed oxygen, but Paulson tells FOX 17 they seem to be just fine.
The initial investigation shows the cause might be a portable air conditioner, but the investigation is still ongoing.
