Foul play ruled out in drowning, but police seek information from public

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Muskegon Police Department is hoping someone has information about the drowning death of James Bortel, 71, of Muskegon

Bortel was found unresponsive in the waters of the lake near the 900 block of Western Avenue just before 2 p.m. Monday, October 19. He eventually was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation was begun into whether Bortel’s death was due to foul play, but after an autopsy, foul play was ruled out.
