MUSKEGON, Mich. — Firefighters say two adults and their two kids were able to safely escape after a fire started outside their Muskegon home early Thursday.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. at a home near the intersection of Beilder Street and West Dale Avenue in Muskegon.

We're told the parents and kids got out after one of the kids noticed the flames and alerted everyone.

The fire chief Jay Paulson tells FOX 17 it appears the fire started outside the home. The family did have working smoke detectors but since the fire was outside they did not go off.

Right now, the fire is out but there is extensive damage to the front of the home.

The cause remains under investigation.
