KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Residents of an encampment in Kalamazoo had to be evacuated early Saturday morning after an "out of control" fire.

It happened around 12:59 a.m. when a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer was near Blaine St. and O Neil St. investigating an unrelated crime.

They saw the large fire and requested a full fire response while rushing to get the residents out of their tents.

There was a propane tank explosion during this time.

Within a minute, fire teams and additional officers arrived. They were able to help evacuate residents and put out the fire within the following ten minutes.

Only one person was injured but they are expected to be ok.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal's office.
