BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A Michigan State Police trooper is seriously injured after a head-on crash and police believe the driver who caused the crash was under the influence.

It happened around 10 p.m. Sunday night, near Columbia Avenue and Stevens Road in Battle Creek.

MSP says the driver and his passenger crossed the center line and hit the on-duty trooper, Christopher Haywood, head-on. The driver and his passenger also suffered severe injuries but all three, including the trooper, are expected to survive.

They were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for medical care.

Spl/Lt. DuWayne Robinson says Haywood suffered a number of fractures to his femur, adding that he has since received surgery and is expected to return home sometime this week.

The driver who hit the trooper, later identified as a 32-year-old Kalamazoo man, is suspected of driving while being impaired by a controlled substance.

His identity is being withheld pending further investigation.
