MSP: 5 injured after driver flees from troopers in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Michigan State Police is investigating after five people were injured when a driver refused to pull over for a traffic stop.

It started around 4:30 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of M-96 King Highway In Kalamazoo when the driver crossed the fog line, according to MSP.

The trooper got behind the suspect's car and witnessed the driver pick up speed and try to pass another car by crossing the center line, almost hitting an eastbound truck head-on.

That is when a trooper tried to pull the car over, but the driver continued to pick up speed. Per the department's policy, the trooper stopped pursuing the car.

The driver ended up crashing into two cars, injuring one of the drivers. The driver of the other car hit by the suspect was not hurt.

The suspect in the crash, an 18-year-old Kalamazoo-area man, was critically injured, along with his passenger, identified as a 16-year-old girl from the Kalamazoo area. Two other occupants suffered less serious injuries.

MSP says drugs and or alcohol are suspected to be a factor in the crash.
