Man's body discovered in retention pond

PORTAGE, Mich. — Police have recovered a man's body from a retention pond near a Lowe's.

Police and fire crews from the Portage Department of Public Safety were dispatched yesterday at about 6:40 p.m. to the Lowe's at 5108 S. Westnedge Ave., according to the department today. They received a report of a body in a retention pond on the property's east side,

The department said fire personnel saw a "subject lying face down in the pond." They "quickly" removed the body and determined it was a deceased 62-year-old man.

Detectives and crime scene technicians were called to the scene to investigate "the circumstances surrounding this incident."

The Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s office also responded to the scene and will conduct more examinations to determine the origin and cause of death.

The man's name is being withheld pending proper notification.
