KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo K-9 helped police find a suspect in a shots fired incident early Thursday morning.

Police were called around 3:53 a.m. to the area of Pierce Avenue and Rose Street on a report of gunshots.

A witness saw a white SUV leaving the area after the shots were fired. Officers found the SUV nearby and tried to stop it, but the river took off.

Police used spikes to deflate the tires, at which point two people got out and ran away towards the intersection of Sprinkle and Kilgore roads.

K-9 Axl was brought to the area to track the suspects and was able to find one of them hiding in the woods near the intersection. Officers found a stolen loaded gun and methamphetamine in the suspect vehicle.

The man found in the woods, a 40-year-old from Kalamazoo, was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of methamphetamine, and resisting and obstructing police.

Police are still searching for a second suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Kalamazoo police at 269-488-8911 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
