KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A late-night fire Thursday had firefighters scrambling to retrieve residents from balconies at Candlewyk Apartments in Kalamazoo.

There was a lot of smoke but eventually little enough damage to allow all residents to return to their apartments.

But the scene was dramatic early on as units arrived around 11 p.m. and used ladder units to rescue residents from their balconies. Other residents managed to get out on the ground floor.

The cause of the fire is suspicious, said a release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

There were no injuries.
