MARSHALL, Mich. — Michigan State Police troopers saved a woman from being scammed out of $15,000.
Authorities say an elderly woman was contacted by someone she thought was her grandson, who said he was in court for a crash and needed $15,000 to be released.
The woman went to the bank, withdrew the money, put it in a box and sent it through FedEx to an address given to her by the fraud who made the call.
Later that night, the woman started to have second thoughts and called MSP. After hearing the woman’s story, the trooper investigating got in touch with FedEx and arranged for the package to be intercepted by the local police department.
It was safely returned to the woman.
MSP warns citizens to always be skeptical of calls asking for money over the phone.
