BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A firefighter was injured and a home sustained extensive damage in a fire Monday morning in Battle Creek.

The fire broke out around 12:18 a.m. at a home on Calhoun Street east of Chestnut Street.

When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the second floor and determined a fire had started in the basement and extended to the walls above.

Firefighters had to open up walls and the ceiling to keep the fire from extending, but there was extensive damage to the basement. Crews were at the home for about three hours.

Everyone inside the home was able to make it out safely before crews arrived. A firefighter was hurt but declined treatment.

Investigators said the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
