KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A suspect is in custody on several charges after an armed robbery attempt early this morning.

Early Sunday morning, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) investigated an armed robbery that took place near N. Burdick and Eleanor St.

Two Kalamazoo residents were walking to work when they were approached by a man.

The man asked them for money, and when they stated they did not have any, the man pulled out a large knife and demanded money.

One of the two citizens was a concealed pistol license holder and drew his weapon to protect himself and significant other.

As the citizens attempted to distance themselves from the suspect, he continued advancing towards them while holding the knife. They were able to retreat to a nearby building and call 911.

After investigation, officers of KDPS were able to find the suspect a short distance away and take him into custody without incident.

The suspect, a 64-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on several felony charges and is currently awaiting arraignment.
