UPDATE: Woman killed near Western Michigan University campus identified

Monday, Oct. 19 update: October 19, 2020: The woman who died from the Oct. 17 shooting at the Hidden Hills Apartment Complex has been identified as 20-year-old Rachel Marie Curl.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) would like to offer its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Curl.

The incident remains under investigation.

Detectives from KDPS are asking that anyone for information regarding the incident to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at (269) 337-8139 or Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100.

Saturday, Oct. 17: A woman was killed and a teenager was wounded during a shooting early Saturday morning near Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

The shootings took place near the Hidden Hills Apartments, a complex just five minutes from the WMU campus.

At 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a possible shooting at 4224 Hidden Hills Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, they found a 20-year-old Kalamazoo woman with a gunshot wound, and provided life-saving measures before taking her to Bronson Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A 19-year-old male from Kalamazoo left the scene in a vehicle and is currently hospitalized with a gunshot wound at the hospital where he was listed in stable condition later Saturday.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
