WYOMING, Mich. — A mother is dead, her child is in serious condition after a head-on crash that also seriously injured the other driver.

It happened Tuesday night near Buchanan Avenue SW and 35th Street in Wyoming.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety says Josefina Jarquin-Altamirano, 35, and her 9-year-old son were traveling south on Buchanan Avenue when a man driving in the northbound lane crossed into oncoming traffic.

Police say the man who allegedly caused the crash was driving "in excess of the posted speed limit".

The woman ended up dying from her injuries overnight and her child remains in serious condition. The 48-year-old man remains in critical condition.

Wyoming police closed Buchanan Avenue at 34th Street because of the crash and low-hanging wires.

The roadway has since reopened.
