WYOMING, Mich. — Police are investigating a Wyoming teenager who was run over by a truck and killed Sunday morning as a homicide.

At 1 a.m. Sunday, the Wyoming Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance near the 1100 block of Whiting Street SW. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a 19-year-old Wyoming man dead. The officers were confronted by an angry and unruly crowd, which required additional response from neighboring police agencies.

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances that occurred during an incident between a group of men on foot in an alley and a man driving a truck, which led to shots being fired and the teen being run over by the truck. The teenager died at the scene.

Police said nobody is believed to have been struck by the gunshots.

The truck driver -- a 28-year-old Grand Rapids man -- fled the scene but the vehicle was later recovered by detectives and the driver was taken into custody. He is being held in the Kent County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a fatal crash and on probable cause for open murder.

The victim's identity is not being released until relatives are notified.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
