WYOMING, Mich. — A man is facing two charges in a 2017 crash that split a car in half and killed two people.

Irsan Menkovic has been charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death in connection with the deaths of 27-year-old Ajdin Dzafic and 30-year-old Christopher Hadley.

The crash happened in November 2017 on Clyde Park Avenue near 52nd Street. Police say the car hit a curb, left the road and hit a fire hydrant and then crashed into a tree. Dzafic and Hadley were both ejected from the back seat and died at the scene.

Menkovic was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash and another passenger only suffered minor injuries.

Police say it took several years to bring charges against Menkovic because the passenger who survived the crash was visiting West Michigan from Germany and had returned home, which hindered investigators from contacting them.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office eventually ordered several DNA samples to compare with the two who survived the crash, which led to charging Menkovic.
