GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Closed since March 27, the Kent County Recycling and Education Center will reopen on Monday, May 4, the county public works department announced in a release Thursday.

“We encourage anyone with recyclables piling up in their garages to begin putting them out at the curb for collection now that we’re operating again,” said county Communications Manager Kristen Wieland.

The facility was shut down not only for the safety of workers but due to disrupted recycling markets where the county disposes of recycling materials.

Back in March, the center’s paper sorting equipment was upgraded, which will cut down on delays in maintenance time dealing with tangles and cleaning screens.

While the center accepts recycling from sources throughout the county, the City of Grand Rapids continued to collect recycling.

Wieland expressed the center’s gratitude for those whose recycling could not be picked up.
