GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Catholic Charities West Michigan and their God's Kitchen programsare doing their part to help by providing food to anyone who needs it.
For the time being their dining room is closed but staff members are preparing and handing out to-go meals. Also, to ensure they're providing the safest services available they have a limited crew of people preparing the food, and it's all staff, no volunteers for now.
Currently they have their Grand Rapids and Muskegon pantries open Monday through Saturday from 12:30pm to 2pm and Sundays from 2:30pm to 4pm.
The Muskegon food pantry has a drive-through and walk-up option and the Grand Rapids location is having people pick up meals in the back of the building.
The baby and toddler pantries are closed for now but they are still giving out free diapers and wipes to anyone who needs them.
“Last week we saw over 200 additional meals that we provided for people. We saw a lot of new faces in, especially like younger college age students we noticed. And then in Muskegon, we had over double the amount of people that we served last week. So normally we have around 70 people that we provide groceries to, and this week we served over 150 each day that we were open,” says Phil Meade, Marketing and Communications Manager at Catholic Charities West Michigan.
At this time organizers say their greatest need is money because with every one dollar received they're able to get 10 dollars worth of food through their partners.
They also have an Amazon wish list of materials needed that they're using to prep the meals.
