Driver in fatal crash charged with 2nd Degree Murder

WYOMING, Mich. — Police filed charges, including 2nd Degree Murder, against a driver involved in a fatal June 6th crash.

Ruben Cavasos of Grand Rapids was arrested July 13th and is being held in the Kent County Jail.

According to Wyoming Police Jean Lieffers, 78, was riding in a vehicle heading south on Byron Center Avenue just before 10 p.m. when it was hit by Cavasos's vehicle at 44th street. Cavasos's vehicle rolled across the median, hitting two east-bound vehicles before coming to a stop. The investigation shows Cavasos was going at 97mph at the time of the crash.

Lieffers was taken to an area hospital, but passed away on June 17th. No one in the eastbound vehicles was hurt.

Cavasos is also charged with 2 counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment of bodily function.
