LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A chain reaction crash on I-96 backed up traffic in eastern Kent County Friday morning.

The problems began when a semi rig overturned around 6:54 a.m., blocking the left lane eastbound before the Alden Nash Avenue exit.

As a backup developed, a semi plowed into several vehicles that had stopped due to the developing traffic jam. Four vehicles were involved, and one driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Another injured driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The freeway was blocked for some time, and one lane was closed on the westbound side, backing up traffic. All lanes were opened westbound shortly after 8 a.m.

All lanes were opened after the crash scene was cleared around 9 a.m.
