TYRONE TOWNSHIP — Michigan State Police say an 18-year-old was killed and several others were hurt in a crash Wednesday evening.

It happened around 6:12 p.m. at the intersection of 17 Mile and Sparta Avenue in Kent County's Tyrone Township.

A 2003 Pontiac Vibe was heading north on Sparta Avenue when the driver allegedly ran the stop sign. Police say it struck a 2020 Chevy Traverse that was traveling west on 17 Mile Road.

An 18-year-old male died at the scene. Aero Med was called in to take a critically injured person to the hospital who was also inside the Ponitac. A third person was also hospitalized with serious injuries. All of them were from the Sand Lake area, according to MSP.

Police say four people were inside the Chevy Traverse at the time of the crash. All of them were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police say they were from the Kent City area.

Investigators say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
