IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — Law enforcement agencies will hold a patrol vehicle tribute Saturday for Michigan State Trooper Caleb Starr, who died last month.

Starr was in the hospital for most of July after getting hit by a drunk driver while on duty in Ionia County. He was 33 years old.

The tribute will begin at 10 a.m. at the Ingham County Fairgrounds. Agencies with marked law enforcement vehicles are invited to participate.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Starr will receive a private funeral instead of the formal, public ones common for law enforcement, Michigan State Police said.

Those who wish to pay their respects to the Starr family may do so virtually by leaving a message here.

Starr joined Michigan State Police in September 2018 as a member of the 135th Trooper Recruit School.

He is survived by his wife, Rachael, who is a civilian member of Michigan State Police, and their two young daughters.

“The Michigan State Police mourns the loss of not just a trooper, but a husband, father and dedicated public servant who had so much left to give in a life that was cut far too short,” said Col. Joe Gasper, director of Michigan State Police.
