IONIA, Mich. — Two people have been flown by Aero Med to the hospital after they were injured in a house fire.

The Ionia Department of Public Safety says the fire happened just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2800 block of N State Road.

When firefighters arrived, they say the house was heavily engulfed and one of the residents was still inside. Firefighters were able to pull the woman from the fire and found a man who was able to make it outside the home.

The couple, identified as Mike and Roxanne Nelson, were flown by Aero Med to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The home is considered a total loss and what caused the fire is still under investigation.

It took six fire departments and 20,000 gallons of water to contain the fire. Officials said the conditions made it more difficult because crews had to work shorter periods of time in order to go warm up.
