GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids police say a new telephone scam is making the rounds.

The scammer impersonates Chief Eric Payne and demands money at some point during the conversation, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department. They say the call appears to be coming from a spoofed number, making it seem as though it’s coming from the City of Grand Rapids (456-3400).

“The Grand Rapids Police Department, including Chief Eric Payne, will not contact community members by phone asking for, or demanding, money,” says Sgt. Dan Adams, public information officer. “We urge residents to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls for donations.”

Police say if you doubt the legitimacy of a caller claiming to represent law enforcement, you are asked to call Grand Rapids police at 616-456-3400.
