GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids bar and restaurant is committed to giving away 100 meals a day to people in need over the next 30 days.
Starting Friday, anyone can call Garage Bar & Grill at 10 a.m. to get a free meal. Once the bar reaches 100 requests, the food will be given away.
"This gives us an opportunity to keep our cooks cooking, our servers serving and keep this little business going," said Garage Bar owner Kevin Farhat.
The business partnered with corporate sponsors like ThirdCoast Development, Mercantile Bank, LeadCo. and private donors to serve the community that supports them.
"When people are in need, they have to eat," Farhat said. "They can just call in, it's not like we're checking to see if they really need it or not, but just kind of the honor system."
Chris Freeman with EatGR encouraged anyone going through a difficult time to call and ask for a meal.
"I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the people that were coming in were actually industry folks, they are the first ones affected, they're the first ones sitting at home right now because there's nothing to do because the restaurants are closed so it's a very difficult and trying time for everybody," Freeman said.
Farhat says the meals are being provided with help from sponsors around Grand Rapids; Pioneer Construction, Insure. It, Century Professional Flooring & Cleaning, Car City, Custer, Mercantile Bank, and EatGR.com.
