GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With the conviction on Wednesday of Luis Ayala-Vieyra in a courtroom in Kalamazoo, the office of U.S Attorney Andrew Birge issued a statement that said “a 15-member drug trafficking operation has been dismantled.”

The arrest of Ayala-Vieyra in 2019 was the culmination of an investigation by the DEA, Kent Area Narcotics Enforcement Team, Metropolitan Enforcement Team, Grand Rapids Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Fourteen other people charged pleaded guilty earlier. Luis Ayala-Vieyra and his brother Inocencio Ayala-Vieyra were tried and convicted together.

The operation mainly dealt in obtaining and selling cocaine, noted the United States Attorney’s Office Western District of Michigan in the statement.
