GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A beloved GRPD officer worked his last shift as watch commander this past weekend.

Lieutenant Patrick Merrill officially retires next year but will be using up accumulated vacation time until then, the department said.

Merrill started at the Grand Rapids Police Department in July 1996 and has worked in the patrol, detective, community relations and support services units.

He was also a member of the bomb team and the departmental archivist.

Merrill is a military veteran, a beekeeper and studied music in college.

GRPD says they’ll long remember his humor, easygoing personality and infectious smile.
