KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A person left their vehicle running today before it was stolen and discovered crashed into a tree across the street Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) reports.

In response to a call from the victim regarding the vehicle, a K-9 track was conducted by KDPS officer Lindsey DenHarder and her K-9 Lex.

Two young suspects were apprehended after the track lead to a home on Hays Park Avenue. The two are now in Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home, where they are being held on several charges related to the incident.

“In recent weeks, we have seen a spike in the number of vehicles stolen after being left unlocked when warming,” said KDPS Assistant Chief Dave Boysen. “We want this unfortunate incident to be a reminder to all Kalamazoo residents to remain vigilant and make sure your vehicles are locked at all times, including when warming on cold winter days. I also want to remind residents that spare keys should not be left in vehicles as criminals are actively searching unlocked cars for keys.”
