BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Police responded to a crash involving one vehicle on M-139 near Diller Road Monday evening.

Witnesses described a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt heading south on M-139 at high speed until it drove off the roadway where it failed to navigate a curve, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office. They say the vehicle struck a dirt embankment, upon which the vehicle flipped, trapping the driver.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Damien Maynor from Benton Harbor, was extricated from the vehicle with the “Jaws of Life” before being taken to Spectrum/Lakeland Hospital for surgery, according to police. He reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash.

We’re told Maynor is in critical condition and has been put in a drug-induced coma.

Police say the crash is under investigation, adding that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
