IONA, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has identified 90 cases of the B.1.1.7 COVID variant at the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia.

90 out of the 95 samples taken were found to have the variant, 88 being prisoners and two being employees. Testing was prompted after an employee was found to have the variant.

B.1.1.7 is believed to be more contagious compared to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and as soon as it was detected in the prison daily testing was enacted.
