BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 35-year-old man is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle and a car Monday night.

Berrien County police responded about 9:10 p.m. to the crash on Union Street near Waverly Drive in Benton Township, according to a news release.

Deputies found the man, Thomas Hoiles of Benton Harbor, lying in the street, unresponsive.

He was transported to Spectrum/Lakeland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators on scene found that a motorcycle driven by Hoiles was traveling northbound on Union Street, approaching the main entrance to the Briarwood Apartments, when a southbound vehicle turned left into the apartment entrance, pulling into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle hit the car on the passenger side and Hoiles was thrown from the bike.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but it wasn’t buckled and came off.

The driver of the car, Anthony Terrel Wilson, fled the scene in the vehicle, but police found him soon after.

Wilson, also from Benton Harbor, was arrested and lodged at the Berrien County Jail for multiple offenses, including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, leaving the scene of an injury accident and drug charges.

A report will be sent to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Alcohol appears to have been a factor in this crash, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

Police continue to investigate.
