GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A network of blood donation centers is reminding residents that its still open during the state-at-home order.

Versiti Blood Center of Michigan locations and community blood drives are continuing to operate, according to Versiti.

"Healthy donors are still needed to ensure an adequate blood supply," Versiti said.

Versitis added that its staff and donors will often be in environments with more than 10 people.

However, this gathering "exception" is supported by several public agencies, according to Versiti.

“This is an extraordinary time in our country and for the health care community,” said Thomas Abshire, chief medical officer, Versiti.

"It is critically important to maintain an adequate blood supply, so these hospitals can deliver life-saving blood products to trauma patients and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.”

Versiti supplies blood to nearly 80 hospitals across the state, he said.
