53,913 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 53,913.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 403 from yesterday, when there were 53,510 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 501 new cases.

The state says there have been 5,158 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 29 from yesterday, when there were 5,129 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 69 new deaths.

Statewide, 28,234 people have recovered from the virus as of May 15. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,590,349 cases, and there have been 95,495 deaths — while 298,418 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
