48,391 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 48,391.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 370 from yesterday, when there were 48,021 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 469 new cases.

The state says there have been 4,714 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 40 from yesterday, when there were 4,674 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 90 new deaths.

Statewide, 22,686 people have recovered from the virus as of May 8. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,381,696 cases, and there have been 83,249 deaths — while 230,287 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
