48,021 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 48,021.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 469 from yesterday, when there were 47,552 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 414 new cases.

The state says there have been 4,674 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 90 from yesterday, when there were 4,584 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 33 new deaths.

Statewide, 22,686 people have recovered from the virus as of May 8. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,358,000 cases, and there have been 81,650 deaths — while 232,733 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
