A kayaker is dead and three others were rescued over the New Year holiday in Niles

According to Mayor Nick Selton, it happened south of the dam at Riverfront Park south.

No identities were issued, but the mayor released this statement:

I am thankful for first responders from the City and our neighbors in the Township who came to the rescue of the kayakers. Chief Larry Lamb repelled the rocky riverside to help locate the missing victim. He and his team aided in the rescue of two of the other three kayakers while the third was able to self-rescue.

Thank you to Millin Towing who assisted in recovery efforts of the missing kayaker, and thank you to members of our drone team who were able to identify what appeared to be an anomaly near the dam, and assisting in the recovery of the missing kayaker.

I will continue to share updates as they become available. Please keep the victim and his family in your thoughts.
