DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police say five people were shot and two of those victims died in connection to a mass shooting Saturday morning on Saratoga Street near Gratiot Avenue on Detroit’s east side.

Detroit police were dispatched Saturday at approximately 10:45 a.m. to a home on Saratoga Street and Gratiot for reports of shots fired.

Once on the scene, officers found five people with gunshot wounds. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person also died, police said in an update Monday.

Two of the victims are in critical condition. The fifth victim is expected to make a full recovery.

On Monday, police said a Macomb County man is in custody. They also said a gun believed to be connected to the incident was recovered.

A second shooting in Detroit Saturday night left seven people hurt. One person in that shooting was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is sad to say, but Detroit is not immune to mass shootings,” Detroit Police Department Chief James E. White said in a statement. “We understand these numbers help make national media headlines, but to us, each one represents a person who is someone’s mother or father, a son or daughter, a loved one, or a friend. The two mass shootings were isolated and not random. I have full confidence in the men and women of the Detroit Police Department and their ability to get these violent offenders off our streets. Our thoughts and prayers are with the surviving victims and their families.”

The investigation remains ongoing and DPD is asking for the public's help. If you have seen or heard anything related to these incident, please call the Detroit Police Department homicide unit at 313-596-2260 or 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
